The United Arab Emirates continues its humanitarian efforts with a substantial contribution to assist Sudanese refugees, focusing on women’s health and empowerment.
UAE’s Commitment to Humanitarian Aid
The United Arab Emirates has announced a significant contribution of $10.25 million (AED 37.65 million) to support Sudanese refugee women in Chad. This latest pledge is part of the UAE’s ongoing humanitarian efforts in the region, demonstrating the nation’s commitment to addressing urgent needs of those affected by conflict.
The funding will be allocated to various United Nations agencies specializing in women’s assistance. $3 million will go to the World Health Organisation for maternal and child health, while $2 million is earmarked for the UN Population Fund to support women’s health and combat sexual and gender-based violence. Additionally, $250,000 will support the World Food Programme’s gender-responsive initiatives, $3 million will aid the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in fostering social cohesion between Sudanese refugees and Chadian women, and $2 million will be directed to the UN Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund.
Comprehensive Support Beyond Financial Aid
The UAE’s support extends beyond monetary contributions. Since the beginning of the crisis, the nation has dispatched 159 relief flights carrying 10,000 tonnes of food and medical supplies. In a move to ensure aid effectiveness, UAE officials, including Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and Special Envoy of the Foreign Minister, visited Chad to meet with Sudanese refugee women and civil society leaders.
This hands-on approach allows the UAE to better understand and address the priorities of affected communities. The visit included fact-finding missions to humanitarian sites and the Abéché Field Hospital, constructed by the UAE to provide medical treatment for Sudanese refugees.
The UAE’s total commitment to the Sudan crisis now stands at $230 million, reflecting the nation’s role as a leading contributor of humanitarian aid in the region. This comprehensive approach to aid, combining financial support with on-the-ground engagement, underscores the UAE’s dedication to making a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by conflict.
