Typhoon Bebinca made landfall in Shanghai as a Category 1 storm, causing significant disruptions to air travel.
The storm, the most powerful to directly hit the Chinese financial hub in over 70 years, has led to the cancellation of numerous flights, affecting both local and international carriers.
Flight Cancellations and Delays
Shanghai’s two main airports, Pudong and Hongqiao, have seen a total of 918 inbound and outbound flights cancelled. Pudong Airport reported 590 cancellations, while Hongqiao Airport had 328. The airport authorities have advised passengers to check their flight status regularly and plan their travel accordingly.
UAE carriers Emirates and Etihad Airways have also been impacted by the typhoon. Emirates has reported delays on several flights between Dubai and Shanghai, with some being postponed by up to 16 hours. The airline is working to rebook affected passengers and has urged customers to ensure their contact details are up to date for timely updates.
Etihad Airways has also experienced disruptions on its Abu Dhabi-Shanghai route. A flight from Abu Dhabi to Shanghai was delayed by over 9 hours, while a return flight from Shanghai to Abu Dhabi faced a 3-hour delay.
Both UAE carriers have stated that they are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates to affected passengers. Travelers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest information on their flights and to make any necessary adjustments to their travel plans in light of the ongoing weather conditions in Shanghai.
